Alternative firmware (for almost all models)

Now this is interesting... If you don't mind my asking, can you share what device was the base firmware for? Is it from a Netronix evaluation kit, or some more obscure e-reader based on the same platform? Maybe a newer version than March 2019 could be found (I tried but without any clues so far couldn't).

On a broader note, what would the advantages of running an alternative firmware be? I've only got myself a Tolino Shine 3 recently, so perhaps I'm missing something. Your version works well for me but there are some features I'd like to have, such as the smart cover detection. I'm also not sure what the differences with the screen refresh are in your version. So far I've stayed on the stock firmware, only getting rid of systemcrashreporter.apk and making some changes to EPubProd.apk, in particular to remove the store from the home screen. Is there any bloat in the stock firmware other than in these two apps, which makes you want to go for a completely different firmware instead?

Because if it's only these two APKs, then EPubProd.apk can be removed as well and the device still works, only without the (1) smart cover functionality, (2) screen refresh tricks, and I think (3) mass storage mounting/unmounting (which I replaced with MTP mode anyway). It seems to me then that the best course of action would be to extract the functionality that deals with all the hardware aspects (screen refresh, etc.) from EPubProd.apk and add it to whatever alternative launcher one wants to use or make another app/service for that running in the background (with a whitelist of reading apps such as org.coolreader to switch into high-quality refresh mode for).

To be clear, I'm not asking you to do anything like this but if you can spare a moment to share your reasons it'd be interesting because you obviously know what you're doing. Is there something deeply annoying and unremovable with the stock firmware that makes it worthwhile to ditch it altogether?

MobiScribe e-ink notepad.

There is a newer version of FW, but it does not bring any improvements.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me personally it is more stable than other firmwares. On every other firmware my books would completely froze and reboot on a random basis. Also, screen contrast adjusting is a killer feature, which is not available on any other fw.

I finally made it with your image to get a bricked Tolion Vision 2 working. Hard.
It works but not very well as some areas are not shown properly.
Is there a way to come back from this image to a original image? I tried to flash a Update.zip (11.2.0 & 11.2.3) to Version 12.2.0 image but this ended up in the usual assertion failed errors.

Already answered on github, but I thought it may be useful to copy it here.

You can load stock recovery (which can be extracted from stock update.zip) using command "fastboot boot recovery.img"

and then flash stock update.zip from there using standard procedure of flashing stock updates.

I'm using Tolino Vision 2 and was in the same situation of https://github.com/Ryogo-Z/tolino_ntx_6sl_twrp/issues/8

I completely flashed the update.zip from tolino support website in TWRP, and after I wiped system partition I find it was impossible to use stock update.zip, so I gave this fw a try. Suprisingly it worked on my tv2!Thx!

(my English is not good and I am reading Deutsch with google translate, so please don't laught at me if you find something indecent of me)

many tricks I could get a quarter working version of TWRP and I tried to install, but got the message:

Target device ntx_6sl is not supported.

I could exchange my Epos 2 and with it I got the same message
Hi

I read about your post. I get exactly the same error message (Target device ntx_6sl is not supported.) when trying to update my Tolino Shine 2 HD with this firmware:

.

Do you remember what you have done to get the mentioned firmware flashed?

Waldy indeed I'm on 4.0.4

I can't flash the original update.zip from twrp. How can I update android version from twrp?

* Now when I think of it. It restarted to recovery. Probably I was still on 10.*

Edit: got it working by flashing original recovery. Update zip in default folder. Flash twrp back and flash custom update from ryogo
